Should Gas Stations Relax on EMV Upgrade Plans?

By sarah.binkley, Gilbarco C-Store Advisor

The short answer—no. First, card brands still intend to implement chargebacks at sites with excessive fraud. This will mean for many sites, the original October of 2017 deadline is still the effective date for accepting EMV transactions.  Second, sites turning on EMV will cause the fraud landscape to change drastically and fraud will migrate to locations without EMV turned on. Fraud and chargebacks may not be of concern for your site today, but this is likely to change as other retailers take the initiative to shut down fraud at their sites. What is your EMV migration plan?
